Joseph F. Morrell

A letter from Joe Morrell, Jr.

What do you get a 76-year-old man for his birthday? Well, on Saturday, June 7, 2014, the Shore Haven Jr. Baseball League answered that question.
The league named the complex behind Seth Haley school after my dad, Joe Morrell. To see the look on his face was priceless. Surrounded by family and friends, West Haven mayor Ed O'Brien announced that the complex would now be known as the Joseph F. Morrell Complex.
My dad has been involved in the league for over forty years. He has done so much in those forty years, but the league has done so much for my dad as well.
The Morrell family would like to thank the entire Shore Haven community for honoring my dad in such a special way. A special thanks goes out to Rick Dini, Frank Dini, Richie Pyrdol and the entire executive board.
The past few years have not been easy for my dad, but Rick, Frank and Richie have always kept my dad in the loop. When my dad said he was going to step down, they talked him out of it. Shore Haven, you have done so much for my dad and my family can not thank you enough.
I would also like to thank Art Kelly who started a scholarship in my dad's name. This is truly a great honor.
As the Shore Haven summer ended this past summer, my dad had a smile on his face knowing his long-time friend, Gene Sullivan, had finally gotten what he deserved; a Shore Haven championship.
Dad passed away on August 5, 2014. The people of Shore Haven played a huge part in dad's life.
Rick and Frank Dini and Richiepyrdol were there right to the end as the family knew they would be.
We know dad can rest in peace knowing the league is being left in good hands and it will continue to always, always put the children's best interests first.

Joe Morrell, Jr.

The Leslie's Jewelers Dodgers won their first championship in team history by defeating the Red Sox, 5-4, July 24, 2014.
The lineup of the Dodgers and defensive play was very strong all year long.
In the championship game, the bottom half of the lineup came through with big hits from C.J. Arpino, Malachi Barreto, Matt Oliwa, Trevor Tompkins and James Guthrie. Kyle Tompkins played solid defense at third base.
12-year-olds Dom Avallone (catcher) and Matt Consorte (first base) were great leaders on and off the field all year long. Ben Carroll improved every start on the mound and peaked in the championship, showing tremendous composure.
Kaden Morgillo and Gianni Gambardella anchored a very strong left side of the infield, while splitting duties at the top of the batting order. Each set the table all year long.
Special thanks to 8 year-olds Jack Hawes and Teagan Grillo for filling in when the team was short players.
All of the Dodgers coaches could not be prouder of how this team worked hard and played together all season long.
