Cold second half hurts in opening loss to Xavier

 - The season opener for the West Haven boys basketball team did not go as planned. Scoring just 14 points in the second half, West Haven fell to Xavier 58-42 at West Haven High Thursday evening.
The Westies, who trailed 31-28 at the half, managed just six points in the third quarter to fall behind by 14 points. West Haven never caught up.
In an evenly played first quarter, West Haven trailed 17-16. Adam Elkharraz hit a pair of big 3-pointers and finished the quarter with seven points, while Jared Butler added five in the quarter.
The two teams continued to battle in the second quarter with Randy Alston knocking down a pair of 3-pointers and Bernett Scott scoring four points for the Westies.
The problem for the Westies was containing Xavier’s Anthony Parker, who finished with 31 points in the game. Parker had five points in the first quarter and nine in the second, before taking over with 11 in the third quarter.
West Haven hit only one field goal in the third quarter, coming from Alston, with the other four points coming from Isaiah Jackson at the free throw line.

Alston led West Haven with 10 points, while Elkharraz had nine, and Jackson added eight. Butler finished with seven points in the loss.


Two in a Row
Butler, Perry lead WH past Norwalk

 - The West Haven boys basketball team improved to 2-1 with a 70-52 victory over Norwalk Monday evening. The Westies led by 16 at the half and never looked back in their second straight victory.
Jared Butler led the Westies with 30 points, while Jayce Perry scored 14. Adam Elkharraz scored nine and Isaiah Jackson added eight in the win.
Butler scored 10 points in the opening quarter to help West Haven to a 16-6 lead, before he added eight more in the second quarter. Perry also scored four times in the quarter.

Butler and Perry combined for 11 points in the third quarter as the Westies led 44-31. Butler, Elkharraz, and Jackson each scored six points in the final quarter when West Haven scored 26 points.


Westies fall to Kolbe
WH drops 55-45 decision

 - After a pair of victories, the West Haven boys basketball team knew it was in for quite a challenge when the team faced Kolbe Cathedral at the Floyd Little Athletic Center Wednesday afternoon. Despite a valiant effort, the Westies fell 55-45.
Najimi George proved to be a thorn in West Haven’s side as he scored 17 points and pulled down 17 rebounds.
West Haven was hurt in the second quarter as Kolbe went on a 15-5 run to turn a two-point game into a 29-17 Kolbe lead at the half. The Westies never recovered.
Despite an evenly played contest the rest of the way, the 12-point first half difference was too much to overcome.
Bernett Scott led West Haven with 11 points. Jayce Perry scored 10 and Randy Alston added nine in the loss. 


Cross tops Westies
Slow start hurts in loss

 - The West Haven boys basketball team fell to 2-4 on the season with its third straight loss. The 92-70 home defeat against Wilbur Cross Thursday evening followed a nail-biting loss at Jonathan Law two days earlier.
Against the Governors, the Westies fell behind early and tried several times in the second half to make a comeback. West Haven was denied each time.
Trailing by 17 points in the third quarter, baskets by Bernett Scott and Bryan Tillman got the Westies within 51-38. A steal and basket by Tillman had the Westies within 53-40, before Cross increased the lead to 58-42.
Tillman then led an 8-2 run with a basket and two free throws to get the Westies within 60-51, but Cross nailed a 3-pointer with one second left in the third quarter to take a 63-51 lead.

Trailing by 14, Tillman drained a 3-pointer, but despite baskets by Isaiah Jackson and Scott, West Haven could not get within single digits again.


Fairfield Prep tops Westies
West Haven falls 60-50

 - The West Haven boys basketball team fell to 3-5 with a 60-50 loss to Fairfield Prep at West Haven High Wednesday evening. The loss was West Haven’s fourth in its last five games.
The Westies jumped out to an early lead, but trailed by three points at the half. After taking a double- digit lead, the Westies could not hold on and Prep pulled away to win by 10.
West Haven took an 11-8 lead in the opening quarter as Adam Elkharraz scored five points. The Westies added 14 points in the second quarter as Jayce Perry scored seven points and Elkharraz scored five points.
Five different players scored in the third quarter as West Haven trailed 45-38. Perry scored four points and Elkharraz drained a 3-pointer. Joseph Williams scored five of his team’s fourth quarter points, while Bernett Scott added four.

Elkharraz led the Westies with 14 points, while Perry added 11, and Scott finished with 10 points.


Westies fall to Hillhouse
West Haven drops 70-57 decision

 - The West Haven boys basketball team is looking to get into a groove. Unfortunately for the Westies, it has been a tough stretch of late.
Falling for the third straight game, and fourth time in its last five contests with a 70-57 home defeat against Hillhouse Tuesday evening, the Westies fell to 4-8 on the season.
The Westies got off to a slow start in the contest, trailing by six after one quarter and by 18 at the half. West Haven chipped away, but Hillhouse bounced back to lead by 16 points after three quarters.
In a slow start for the Westies, they scored just 10 points in the opening quarter on just three shots from the field, including 3-pointers from Adam El Kharraz and Jayce Perry, a basket by Perry , and two free throws by El Kharraz.
El Kharraz, who led West Haven with 18 points, scored eight more points in the second quarter, but only received offensive support from Bernett Scott and Perry with a bucket each in the same time frame.
Perry, with six points, and El Kharraz (5 points) led the way in the third quarter, but it was not enough for West Haven.

Perry finished the game with 15 points, and Scott added 12, including eight in the final 12 minutes. Joseph Williams added six points in the loss for West Haven. 


Balanced Attack
Westies top Prince Tech 77-51

- The West Haven boys basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak with a 77-51 victory over Prince Tech at West Haven Monday evening. With the win, West Haven improved to 5-9 on the year.
The Westies had four players in double figures, led by Bernett Scott and Terez Johnson, each with 14. Jayce Perry finished with 12 points and Isaiah Jackson added 10 for the Westies.
West Haven led by six points after one quarter of play as Johnson had six points, four from the free throw line, and Williams had four. The Westies went up 33-24 in the second quarter behind six more from Johnson and four from Bryan Tillman, before pulling away in the third when Perry scored six points, and Scott, Jackson, and Randy Alston each scored three.
Scott helped West Haven seal the contest in the fourth quarter with nine points, while Jackson had five, and Perry four.

Tillman finished with eight points and Amari Brooks had six in the win.


Law tops Westies
WH falls 64-59

 - Looking to gain some momentum after its win over Prince Tech, the West Haven boys basketball team faced a tough Jonathan Law team Tuesday evening. In a tight battle to the end, West Haven fell to the Lawmen 64-59 at West Haven High.
With the loss, the Westies fell to 5-10 on the year.
Adam El Kharraz led West Haven with 21 points, Jayce Perry scored 11, Bryan Tillman added nine, and Bernett Scott eight in the loss.  
The Westies took a 17-15 lead after one quarter as El Kharraz scored seven points, and Perry and Tillman each drained 3-pointers. Law held West Haven to just two field goals in the second quarter, including another 3-pointer by Tillman, to lead the Westies 30-26 at the half.
El Kharraz scored eight points and Scott contributed six in the third quarter, but the Westies still trailed by four points entering the final quarter.

The Westies were 10-of-18 at the free throw line, which proved to be the difference in the game.


Westies run past Amity
WH wins 90-53

 - The West Haven boys basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 90-53 victory over Amity Monday evening at West Haven High. The win helped the Westies improve to 6-11 on the year.
The Westies had 10 different players in the scoring column and were led by Randy Alston with 24 points. Isaiah Jackson had 13 points, while Bryan Tillman and Carlos Garcia each scored nine points. Amare Brooks and Ryan DiMaria each scored eight, while Jayce Perry scored seven.
West Haven led 21-10 after one quarter and 46-25 at the half. West Haven put the game away in the third quarter, leading 68-38.Garcia hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter and Randy Alston drained a pair of 3-pointers.

Jackson and Alston each scored eight in the second quarter. Perry scored seven points in the third quarter.


Alston leads Westies
Senior scores 45 in win over Lyman Hall

 - West Haven senior Randy Alston and his teammates are preparing for the postseason. Alston and company had one final farewell for the West Haven faithful.  
Dropping 45 points, including 35 in a thrilling first half, Alston led West Haven to a 97-48 victory over Lyman Hall Friday evening on Senior Night at West Haven High. Alston added 10 more in the third quarter, before coming out in the fourth quarter.
Adam El Kharraz scored 11 points, and Joseph Williams and Ethan Griffin each scored 10 in the win for West Haven. Hakim Dembele scored eight as West Haven had 11 players in the scoring column.
The second straight victory allowed the Westies to improve to 7-11 on the year with a pair of regular season games remaining.
Alston’s efforts gave West Haven a 32-7 first quarter lead as he scored 16 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. El Kharraz and Williams each scored six in the opening quarter.
Alston was even better in the second quarter with 19 points, including three more 3-pointers as the Westies cruised to a 53-23 halftime lead. Alston scored all but two of West Haven’s points in the quarter, the others coming on a field goal by Jayce Perry.

Griffin scored 10 fourth quarter points for West Haven. 


NDWH tops Westies
West Haven falls 74-55

 - The West Haven boys basketball team fell to 7-12 with a 74-55 loss against cross-town rival Notre Dame Tuesday evening.
The Westies fell behind by nine points after one quarter and 16 at the half. The Green Knights continued to extend the lead, which was too much for West Haven to overcome.
Adam El Kharraz scored 10 of his team’s 12 first quarter points and finished with a team-high 23 in the game. El Kharraz added three 3-pointers in the second quarter and Bernett Scott scored four of his 10 points in the second quarter, but the Westies trailed 41-25 at the half.
Six different players scored in the third quarter for the Westies, led by Randy Alston and Carlos Garcia with 3-pointers.Isaiah Jackson and Garcia each finished with six points in the game.
