2016-2017 Winter Athletes of the Year

Veronica Lynn (66)

Sophomore

Girls Hockey

The West Haven girls hockey team had a season to remember this winter. Winning a Southern Connecticut Conference Division II title and advancing to the state tournament capped what was the best season in the history of the West Haven/Sacred Heart Academy hockey team.

The Westie Sharks had it all as it was a team which could score, play defense and receive solid goaltending. The key to the team was the overall defensive effort it put forth each game.

Leading the way was sophomore Veronica Lynn. Playing more than 35 minutes per game and anchoring the defense, Lynn was a key reason for the success of the Westie Sharks.

Lynn did it all for the Westie Sharks as she finished with seven goals and three assists, and more importantly, had 46 blocked shots.

For her efforts, Lynn was a First Team All-State selection, joining senior Gabi Prisco as the only two players in the history of the girls hockey program to be named All-State selections.

Pete Richetelli (8)

Senior

Boys Hockey

The West Haven boys hockey team entered the 2016-2017 not on the radar of many. By season's end, the Westies became a team no one wanted to play in the postseason.

Finishing with an impressive 14-6 regular season record, the Westies went on to win their first two state tournament games before falling in the semifinals against Ridgefield at Yale University's Ingalls Rink.

While there were many reasons and players who contributed to the team's success, one player stood out on a daily basis.

Senior Pete Richetelli capped his finest season in a West Haven uniform by leading the Westies in all three offensive categories. The senior finished the year with a team-leading 22 goals, 26 assists and 48 points.

Richetelli was such a dynamic force he recorded points in 19 of his team's 23 games, including two goals and three assists against Conard, one goal and three assists against East Haven, and three goals against Cheshire.

As a result of his hard work, Richetelli joined a select group in the history of the program as he was named to the the All-State team following the season.

2016 Fall Athletes of the Year

Gabi Prisco (20)

Senior

Girls Soccer

In a season in which West Haven had hopes of returning to the postseason, senior Gabi Prisco made sure her final campaign on the soccer field was a memorable one as she led her team to berths in both the Southern Connecticut Conference and state tournaments, and a 10-5-4 record.

All the senior did was lead the Westies in every offensive category, including 17 goals, 13 assists and 47 points.

Prisco had points in 12 of West Haven's 19 games and scored multiple goals in five of those contests. The senior scored four times against Cross, added another three against the Governors, and scored twice in each game against Foran, Bunnell and North Haven.

Anthony Godfrey (6)

Senior

Football

The West Haven football team had a regular season to remember, going undefeated with a 10-0 record and a berth in the postseason. While there were many weapons in the West Haven offense, Anthony Godfrey proved too tough for opponents to stop.

The senior was just too good for most teams as he finished the season with 1,769 yards rushing on 163 carries for an average of 10.9 yards per carry. Godfrey scored 28 touchdowns on the year, 23 on the ground and five through the air.

Godfrey also caught nine passes for 233 yards and finished the year with 168 points. What makes the numbers even more remarkable is the fact Godfrey did his work in a little over nine games as he missed the game against Fairfield Prep on Thanksgiving and was limited in the playoff loss to Ridgefield.

2016 Spring Athletes of the Year

Julia Bothwell
Senior
Softball
The 2016 softball team had clear goals to play in both the Southern Connecticut Conference and state tournaments this season. Senior Julia Bothwell helped make sure those goals were attained.
Whether it was in the pitching circle or at the plate, Bothwell was a main reason the Westies qualified for each.
In the circle, Bothwell led the team with nine wins, including the postseason-clinching victory over Hamden and winning the first round state contest against Glastonbury
At the plate, Bothwell was a force. The senior led the way with a team-leading 30 hits and 27 runs batted in.
Bothwell's best game on offense came at Shelton in the second game of the season as she had five hits, drove in four runs and scored twice.

Abdoul Aremu
Junior
Boys Track
The West Haven boys track team has had some brilliant moments this past season. The best may have come in the postseason.
While the team enjoyed success, no one had more individual success than junior Abdoul Aremu as he was named the Male Most Outstanding Performer in the Southern Connecticut Conference championship meet in May.
Aremu was part of the victorious 4 x100 team, a group which lost just once during the entire season. It was in that loss the group of Aremu, Talon Butler, Jeffrey Flores-Santiago and Andrew Highsmith set a school record in 43.27 seconds.
As he has done all season long, Aremu ran extremely well in the 100 and 200. In the SCC meet, Aremu was first in each, winning the 100 in 11.9 seconds and the 200 in 22.48 seconds.
In the SCC West Sectionals, Aremu was second in the 100, won the 200 and was part of the victorious 4 x 100 team once again.

Gabi Prisco
Junior
Girls Hockey
The 2015-2016 girls hockey team had a different look from the start. Merging with Sacred Heart Academy to form the West Haven/SHA girls hockey team, the Westies were a team which would go on to have their best season in recent memory.
West Haven/Sacred Heart Academy finished with a 10-10-2 record and came within a few minutes of taking home the Southern Connecticut Conference Division II crown.
While there were many reasons for the successful season, one player stood out throughout the season. That player is junior Gabi Prisco.
Prisco was among the team leaders in just about every category as she tied for the team lead in points with Lindsey Gerzabek as each had 18. Playing defense, Prisco was second on the team with 11 goals and second on the team with seven assists.
For the second straight season, Prisco was named to the All-State team as she remains the only female hockey player in West Haven history to place on this team.
For her efforts, Prisco was also named the SCC Division II Player of the Year.

Tyler Paine
Senior
Boys Hockey
Heading into the 2015-2016 season, Tyler Paine was well aware a lot was going to be expected of him. Coming off a solid season, Paine was going to be one of the players head coach Joe Morrell relied on the most.
Paine did not disappoint.  The junior finished the year on the All-State team and was a Southern Connecticut Conference Division I First team selection.
Paine was at the center of West Haven's scoring throughout the season as he lead the team in goals (18), assists (18) and points (36).
Paine had points in 14 of the team's 21 games, including scoring at least once in nine of those contests. The senior scored multiple goals in four games, including five goals and two assists in a win against East Haven, and three goals in another win against Cheshire.
Paine also had four assists in a win over North Haven as the Westies advanced to the opening round of the Division I state tournament before falling to Xavier.

2015 Fall Athletes of the Year

For their efforts in the 2015 fall season, Amanda DiLeonardo and Salah Oumorou have been named the Vio's Sports Plus/Westie Blue Male and Female Fall Athletes of the Year.

Amanda DiLeonardo
Senior
Volleyball
The West Haven girls volleyball team enjoyed one of its best seasons in recent memory, advancing to the second round of both the Southern Connecticut Conference and state tournaments. One of the key reasons for the team's success was senior hitter Amanda DiLeonardo.
An SCC All-Quinnipiac selection, DiLeonardo was a force all over the court, leading the team in kills, aces and digs. A solid hitter, the senior had 181 kills and delivered 63 aces. If those were not enough, DiLeonardo was a solid defender, preventing opposing points with 176 digs. DiLeonardo also finished with 11 blocks on the season.
"Amanda has worked extremely hard and was a huge asset to our team this season," West Haven coach Kate Coldren said. "She is very deserving of this award."
DiLeonardo's two best performances of the season came in hard-fought victories.
In a 3-2 win over Sacred Heart Academy, DiLeonardo had 13 kills and 17 digs. In a 3-1 victory at Mercy, DiLeonardo was a force at the net with 17 kills and added five digs.

Salah Oumorou (15)
Junior
Boys Soccer
Often opposing teams will mark a top player with its defensive specialist. West Haven's Salah Oumorou saw his share of marks this season, but none deterred him.
Oumorou was so good teams often had multiple players flowing to him. In the end, it was Oumorou who came out on top.
The West Haven junior was nearly unstoppable, finishing with a team-leading 31 goals and 67 points as the Westies reached the Southern Connecticut Conference finals and the second round of the CIAC Class LL state tournament.
"Salah is a very special player, one that may come around once every 20 years," West Haven coach Pete Hamasian said. "He continues to get better every year."
Named the Southern Connecticut Conference Player of the Year, Oumorou was on a different level.
He scored multiple goals in nine different games, including four tallies twice, three goals three times and two goals four times.

2015 Spring Athletes of the Year

For their efforts in the 2015 Spring season, Mike Savino (l.) and Kial Watts (r.) have been named the Vio's Sports Plus / Westie Blue Male and Female Spring Athletes of the Year. Photo courtesy of WHHS.

Kial Watts
Senior
Softball
In a season which saw the Westies qualify for the postseason before falling in the opening round of the state tournament, one consistent player was Kial Watts.
Not only did the senior pitch in 17 games, she was a dominant force on top of West Haven's batting lineup. In 21 games, Watts hit .521, had a .580 on base percentage and an .817 slugging percentage.
Watts finished the season with 37 hits, including 19 singles, 15 doubles and three triples. The senior drove in 12 runs, scored 26 runs, drew nine walks and struck out just once in 81 plate appearances.
Watts also finished the season with a .934 fielding percentage.

Mike Savino
Senior
Baseball
Coming off a solid hockey campaign, Mike Savino was going to have a hard time topping his senior season on the ice. With an explosive bat, Savino may have done so.
In 21 games, Savino was a tough out as he finished with a .500 batting average, a .561 on base percentage and a .653 slugging percentage.
Savino had 36 hits in 72 at bats, including 27 singles, seven doubles and two triples. The senior drove in 15 runs, scored 29, and struck out only seven times in 82 plate appearances.
Defensively, Savino had 94 total chances, finishing with 58 assists and 28 put outs, while being a part of 14 double plays.

2014-2015 Winter Athletes of the Year

For their efforts in the 2014-2015 Winter season, Gabi Prisco (second from r.), Brandon Sebastian (l.) Max Padro (second from l.) and Mike Savino (far r.) have been named the Vio's Sports Plus/Westie Blue Male and Female Athletes of the Year. Photo courtesy of WHHS.

Gabi Prisco
Sophomore
Girls hockey
In a season which saw the girls hockey team produce just three wins, a bright spot came in the form of sophomore Gabi Prisco.
Prisco, who was a regular on defense, but contributed mightily on offense, led the team with 19 goals, 7 assists and 26 points.
For her efforts, Prisco was named to the All-Southern Connecticut Conference Second Team and became the first player in school history to be named to the All-State First Team in girls hockey.
Prisco scored in 10 of her team's 20 games, scoring multiple goals seven times. Prisco, who was a force in both the offensive and defensive ends all season, scored four goals in a 9-3 win over Lauralton Hall.

Max Padro
Junior
Boys Swimming
Max Padro began swimming competitively at the age of nine. The results of all his hard work continue to pay off.
The West Haven junior became the first West Haven swimmer in school history to win a Class L state title, winning the 200 IM at the CIAC Class L final with a personal best and school record, 1 minute, 56.02 seconds.
Padro was not done as he also placed second in the 100 butterfly with a time of 52.93 seconds.
Placing in the top two in the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly, Padro will see his name recognized as All-State selections in each.
As a sophomore, Padro broke records in the 100 butterfly, 200 IM and 500 freestyle, only to top his own marks this season.

Brandon Sebastian (c.)
Sophomore
Boys Indoor Track
Having already made a name for himself on the football field with an exceptional fall season, Brandon Sebastian was not to be silent in the winter campaign.
Participating on the boys indoor track team, Sebastian made all take notice, winning the New England Indoor Track Championship in the long jump event and qualifying for the Nationals.
The sophomore put forth a record-breaking performance, placing first in Boston, Mass., February 27, with a school record jump of 23 feet, 4 inches, easily eclipsing the previous school mark of 20 feet, 10 inches.
Sebastian qualified for the New England championship in February, placing second in both the CIAC Class LL Championship and the CIAC Indoor Track State Championship meet, both at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.

Mike Savino
Senior
Boys hockey
Coming into the 2014-2015 season, senior goaltender MIke Savino knew he would be a key player in the success of the team. Savino came up big time and time again.
The senior goaltender finished the season with 614 saves and a 92% save percentage. He was named to the All-SCC/SWC Division I First Team, All-State First Team and was named the Most Valuable Player in Division I.
While there were numerous contests in which Savino kept his team in the game, one will stand out for seasons to come.
In an opening round contest against Xavier in the Division I state tournament, Savino came within 9 seconds of carrying his team to an upset victory over the heavily favored Falcons.
The senior turned aside the first 44 shots he faced, most in spectacular fashion, before the Falcons tied the game in the final seconds and won in overtime.
Savino finished the year with three shutouts. He allowed one goal three times and two goals five times.

2014 Fall Athletes of the Year

For their efforts in the 2014 Fall season, Gabi Prisco (r.) and Salah Oumorou (l.) have been named the Vio's Sports Plus/Westie Blue Male and Female Fall Athletes of the Year. Photo courtesy of WHHS.

Gabi Prisco
Sophomore
Girls Soccer
In a season which ended in heartbreak, including gut-wrenching losses to Shelton (SCC) and Amity (state tournament), there were plenty of bright spots for the Westies. One of those bright spots was sophomore Gabi Prisco.
Following a freshman year which put the second-year star on the radar, Prisco continued to step forward. The sophomore continually came up big, finishing with 9 goals, which was second on the team, and a team-leading 12 assists and 30 points.
Marked by every team on a consistent basis, Prisco, a New Haven Register/GameTimeCt All-Area selection, showed her skills throughout the season, but never more so than in the first round of the state tournament against Amity.
With the Westies trailing by a goal in the second half, the sophomore ripped a curling shot from an angle which snuck under the crossbar into the top corner for the equalizer.
Then, with the season on the line in penalty kicks, Prisco never wavered. Calmly preparing for her turn, Prisco swiftly drilled a shot to the left corner to prolong the penalty kicks before West Haven eventually fell to the Spartans.
Also a standout lacrosse player, Prisco scored in seven of West Haven's games and had points in 12 of the team's 18 games.

Salah Oumorou
Sophomore
Boys Soccer
If ever first-year boys soccer coach Pete Hamasian needed to find a diamond in the rough, that diamond was Salah Oumorou.
Racing on to the scene as a sophomore, Oumorou surprised at first and impressed from there. Oumorou finished the season with a team-leading 23 goals and 50 points, while also adding four assists.
Oumorou had points in 12 games and scored multiple goals in 8 games this past season.
Ask an opposing coach what makes Oumorou a special player, all have to pause and think as there are many solid aspects of his game. Oumorou's footwork and ability to win in tight spaces separated him from most players throughout the year. Oumorou's vision of the field, terrific instincts and ability to score big goals played a huge part in his success.
Oumorou, the New Haven Register/GameTimeCt All-Area MVP and All-State selection, opened the season with three goals against Law and scored 4 times two games later against East Haven. When Oumorou scored twice against Hamden, the Westies opened the season at 5-0.
Oumorou added two more goals each against Sheehan, East Haven and Law in what would prove to be a special season for the dynamic sophomore.

2014 Spring Athletes of the Year

For their efforts in the 2014 Spring season, Matt Carter (l.) and Ava Gambardella (r.) have been named the Vio's Sports Plus / Westie Blue Male and Female Spring Athletes of the Year. Photo courtesy of WHHS.

Ava Gambardella
Senior
Girls' Lacrosse
In a season which saw plenty of thrilling moments for the girls' lacrosse team, Ava Gambardella may have been at the center of them all. Not only was the West Haven senior an emotional leader on the field, she was a leader where it mattered most - in the scoring column.
Gambardella finished the year with 62 points, including 50 goals and 12 assists. Of the 16 games the Westies played, Gambardella was in the scoring column in 15 of those contests.
Gambardella scored multiple goals 14 times, with 6 goals once, 5 goals 3 times 4 goals twice and 3 goals four times.
The senior helped West Haven get off to a 4-0 start with 4 goals and one assist in a 16-11 victory over Bunnell, scored 6 times and added an assist in a 19-15 win over North Haven and scored 5 goals in each of consecutive wins over Lyman Hall and North Haven.
Gambardella's biggest game may have come in the first meeting of the year against Sacred Heart Academy as her 5 goals and 2 assists, including the winner in overtime, helped West Haven qualify for the postseason.

Matt Carter
Senior
Baseball
The West Haven baseball team may have had several question marks entering the 2014 season, but senior Matt Carter was there to answer plenty of them.
Expected to be a key contributor, Carter did not disappoint. Whether it was offensively, defensively or on the pitching mound, Carter seemed to answer every challenge.
On the hill, Carter became the team's ace. The senior pitched 56.1 innings, finishing with a 5-3 record and 1 save. Carter allowed 41 hits and 20 runs, 17 of which were earned, while walking 35 and striking out 56.
The senior finished with an earned run average of 2.11 and a WHIP (Walks plus Hits per Innings Pitched) of 1.34.
Offensively, Carter was equally impressive, finishing with a .333 batting average with 23 hits. Carter finished with 18 singles, 4 doubles, 1 triple, 14 runs batted in and 15 runs scored. Carter finished with a .387 on base percentage and a .420 slugging percentage.
Carter was at his best down the stretch, including the postseason, as he tossed a complete game, 5-hitter, striking out 9 and walking 4 in a Class LL opening round victory over NFA. Just one day later, Carter came on in relief and got the Westies to extra innings before falling to Southington in the Class LL second round.
In the season's final week, Carter picked up a pair of victories. He tossed a 4-hitter in a 2-1 win over Career and four days later allowed just 5 hits and struck out 7 in an 8-2 win over Hand.

2013 - 2014 Winter Athletes of the Year

For their efforts in the 2013 - 2014 Winter season, Mike Savino (l.) and Mya Berretta (r.) were named the Westie Blue Male and Female Athletes of the Year.

Mya Berretta
Freshman
Girls' Hockey
If there were ever doubts of how good Mya Berretta would be this year, they were quickly erased when the freshman scored 13 goals in the first three games of the season.
Those goals were just a glimpse of what was to come. By the time the season was over, Berretta scored an astonishing 60 goals and finished with 68 points.
To put Berretta's season in perspective, West Haven played 18 games and Berretta failed to score in just one of those contests.
Berretta finished with 6 goals in a game three times, 5 goals in a game three times and 4 goals in a contest three times. There were also five times she scored twice in a game.
How dominant was Berretta?
In an 8-6 win over Stamford/Westhill/Staples, the freshman had 6 goals and an assist. She scored all 6 goals in a 6-5 win over Hand and had 4 goals and 2 assists in a 6-6 tie with Branford.
In a game played for a berth in the SCC Division II finals against Notre Dame-Fairfield, Berretta's line, which also included Marisa Pacapelli and Gabi Prisco, played all of about 5 minutes in a game which went to double overtime before the Westies fell 4-3.

Mike Savino
Junior
Boys' Hockey
In a season in which West Haven had its scoring troubles, extra pressure was put on goaltender Mike Savino. Savino responded in style.
Facing 684 shots, Savino stopped 623 for a 91% save percentage. The West Haven goaltender was given credit for 1 shutout, while also stopping all 34 shots he faced in a win over Milford late in the season. Savino allowed just one goal in six different contests during the year.
Savino constantly showed signs of how good he was throughout the year, stopping 33 of 35 shots in a comeback victory over Notre Dame-Fairfield, 35 of 38 shots in a win over Hamden and 38 of 42 shots in a late season loss to the Lancers.
With West Haven looking to get in a groove for the postseason, Savino was on his game as he allowed just one goal in three games of a 4-game winning streak, stopping 35 of 36 shots against North Haven, 26 of 27 shots against Branford and 32 of 33 shots against Xavier.

2013 Fall Athletes of the Year

For their efforts in the 2013 Fall season, Ervin Philips (l.) and Pablo Perez (r.) were named the Westie Blue Male Co-Athletes of the Year, while Leah Morrissey (c.) was named the Westie Blue Female Athlete of the Year

Leah Morrissey
Senior
Volleyball
Looking to return to the postseason, the West Haven volleyball team turned to Leah Morrissey. The West Haven senior led the way from the start on both sides of the ball. Leading by example, Morrissey helped her team return to both the SCC and state tournaments, where they lost in the first round of each. The senior ran the offense with a team-leading 264 assists and had 30 aces. On the defensive side, Morrissey was just as good as she finished second on the team with 295 digs. Morrissey was named to the SCC All-Quinnipiac Division team.

Pablo Perez
Senior
Boys' Soccer
Knowing he would get two or more players covering him each game, Pablo Perez never backed down. The West Haven senior did the exact opposite, leading his team with 13 goals and 14 assists to finish with 40 points. With Perez leading the way, the Westies returned to the postseason, where they fell to Guilford in the opening round of the Class LL state tournament. Perez was named to the SCC All-Quinnipiac Division team, was named to the New Haven Register All-Area team, where he was named the most valuable player, and also made the All-State and All-New England teams.

Ervin Philips
Senior
Football
With one year remaining in his high school career, Philips was sure to not disappoint. A year away from taking his talents to Syracuse University, Philips put on a show each week. The senior ran for 1,819 yards and 35 touchdowns in leading the Westies to the Class LL semifinals, where they fell to Fairfield Prep. Known for his offensive expertise, Philips may be best remembered this season for a game-saving tackle against Xavier, which propelled the Westies to a thrilling overtime victory. Philips was named the Westie Blue Player of the Weekthree times and has been named the Westie Blue Male Fall Athlete of the Year three straight years.

Morgillo enjoyed a regular season in which she threw all 149 2/3 innings, allowing just 32 earned runs and finishing with a 1.50 earned run average. Morgillo struck out 160 batters.

For her efforts throughout the season, Morgillo has been named the 2012-13 Westie Blue Female Spring Athlete of the Year.

Tyler Gambardella
Senior
Baseball
Playing on a team with high expectations entering the season, Gambardella did his part. The senior was flawless in the field, at the plate and on the mound.
"He had a great year both offensively and defensively," West Haven coach Mike Anquillare said of Gambardella. "He did it all for us. He was a great leadoff hitter. Most importantly, he was a great captain.
"That is a testament to him. He was a good leader. I had all 3 boys and all made All-State."
Gambardella led the team with a .370 batting average, having a team-leading 27 hits. He tied for the team lead with 6 doubles, led the team with 3 triples and also was the team leader with a .483 on base percentage and a .534 slugging percentage.

On the mound, Gambardella threw 40 2/3 innings, compiling a 4-3 record. Gambardella allowed just 15 earned runs, struck out 34 and finished with a 2.58 earned run average.
In the field, Gambardella was equally impressive. The senior had 36 total chances and committed just 1 error to finish with a .972 fielding percentage.
Gambardella was named to the Coaches Association All-State First Team and was also given the Southern Connecticut Diamond Club's "No I in Team Award."

2012-13 Westie Blue Winter Athletes of the Year.

Hansen, who was named to the CHSCA Division I All-State First Team, had 6 games where he scored multiple goals and 10 games where he had multiple points.
Perhaps the most impressive statistic involving Hansen came in the latter part of the season as Hansen either scored or assisted on 37 of West Haven's final 49 goals of the year, including 6 goals in a playoff-clinching win over Fermi.
For his career, Hansen finished 2 points shy of the 100-point club with 98 points.
For his efforts throughout the season, Hansen is the Westie Blue Male Winter Athlete of the Year.

Jayva Johnson
Senior
Girls' Basketball
Entering the season knowing she would be the focal point of the team's offense, Johnson did not disappoint. Despite drawing all the attention of opposing defenses, Johnson led the team with 473 points, 220 rebounds, 56 blocks and 60 steals.
Johnson averaged 22.5 points per game, 10.5 rebounds per game, 2.7 blocks per game and 2.9 steals per game.
Johnson was so good this season she scored in double digits in every game but one and led the team in scoring in every game but two.
While Johnson did not score in double digits against Amity in the first meeting of the year, it was her effort in the second game of the season against the Spartans which helped the Westies to the postseason. In that contest, Johnson scored 36 points, had 3 assists, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 steals in a 60-54 win at Amity, which improved the Westies' record to 7-9 at the time.
The Westies qualified for the CIAC Class LL state tournament where they were eliminated by Stamford in the first round. In that game, Johnson closed her high school career with 25 points, 8 rebounds, 8 blocks and 4 steals.
Johnson, who was named to the Southern Connecticut Conference All-Quinnipiac First Team, became the sixth player in West Haven girls' basketball history to score 1,000 poins when she drained 25 points against Jonathan Law in January.

For her efforts throughout the season, Fournier is the Westie Blue Female Fall Athlete of the Year.

Week Ending March 12, 2017

Alex Lynch
Senior
Boys hockey
In two postseason games, defense has been the key for the West Haven boys hockey team. Leading the way for the Westies has been senior Alex Lynch.
Lynch has anchored a defense which has allowed just three goals in two postseason games, leading the Westies to the Division I semifinals.
Lynch has also been an offensive spark. In a 5-2 opening round victory over Fairfield Warde/Ludlowe, Lynch had a pair of assists.
In the quarterfinal round against Xavier, Lynch helped his team to a 4-1 victory, scoring a pivotal goal in the final minutes to give the Westies breathing room.

Week Ending March 5, 2017

Max Lynch (94)

Boys hockey

As the West Haven boys hockey team prepares for the postseason, senior Max Lynch is making sure the team is headed in the right direction.

Lynch played a key role for the Westies this week as they split a pair of games, adding a goal and five assists.

In West Haven's opener of the week, a win over Glastonbury, Lynch had a goal and three assists. While the Westies fell to Hamden in the second contest, Lynch assisted on two of the team's three goals.

Week Ending February 26, 2017

Taylor Nowak (11)

In two SCC tournament games, Nowak scored five times, including three in a championship victory over Amity/North Haven/Cheshire.

Nowak scored twice to lead the Westie Sharks to a 4-1 victory over Notre Dame-Fairfield in the SCC semifinals. The freshman then upped her performance, scoring the first three goals of the game as the Westie Sharks took home the SCC Division II title with a 4-1 victory over Amity/North Haven/Cheshire.

Week Ending February 19, 2017

Amanda Carr (10)

Junior

Girls basketball

With the Westies making their first playoff appearance in a few years, Amanda Carr has been a big part of the team success. Carr again made a difference this week as she scored in double digits in two of the three games West Haven played.

West Haven opened the week with a victory over Sacred Heart Academy and Carr had 14 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and an assist. Carr added seven points, one rebound, one steal and two blocks against Harding in the regular season finale, before scoring 10 points, and having seven rebounds in an opening round loss of the SCC tournament against East Haven.

Week Ending February 12, 2017

Jaymesha Sanders (23)

Senior

Girls basketball

At a time when the girls basketball team has needed it most, senior Jaymesha Sanders responded. Winning four of its last five games and on the verge of clinching a postseason bid, West Haven has turned to its leader in Sanders.

In a pair of games this week, Sanders has scored 44 points and pulled down 28 rebounds.

West Haven opened the week with a 50-35 victory over Sheehan and Sanders was the catalyst. Sanders scored 16 points, grabbed 15 rebounds, and added one steal and one block. In a 57-54 overtime victory over Cheshire, Sanders was at it again, scoring 28 points and pulling down 13 rebounds.

Week Ending February 5, 2017

Tatum Courtmanche (35)

Freshman

Girls hockey

With the West Haven/Sacred Heart Academy girls hockey team playing extremely well, there have been many reasons for the team's success. One of those reasons is Tatum Courtmanche.

The freshman goaltender has been solid all year, and this week was no different.

Playing a pair of games this week, Courtmanche never blinked, stopping all 44 shots sent her way.

Courtmanche opened the week by stopping all 21 shots in a 3-0 victory over East Catholic/Glastonbury/South Windsor. The freshman closed the week with a a 1-0 shutout victory over Hand, stopping all 23 shots she faced.

Week Ending January 29, 2017

Peter Richetelli (8)

Senior

Boys hockey

With his team in the midst of a two-game losing streak, senior Pete Richetelli knew the task at hand. That task included getting the Westies back on the winning track and into the postseason.

Behind the play of Richetelli, West Haven won a pair of games this week and qualified for the state tournament.

In a 4-1 victory over Amity to start the week, Richetelli was all over the ice. When all was said and done, the senior scored an insurance goal late in the contest and assisted on two earlier goals which proved to be the difference in the game.

Looking for win number eight on the season and a berth in the postseason, Richetelli was again a key part of a win over Notre Dame-Fairfield. His goal helped lead the Westies to a 5-3 victory over the Lancers and secured a postseason bid.

Week Ending January 22, 2017

Marquel Bookert

In a 30-point win over Jonathan Law, Bookert had 21 points, three 3-pointers and two assists. In a five-point overtime win over Career, Bookert had 13 points, three 3-pointers, three rebounds, one assist and one steal.

A key part of those wins was Francesca Criscuolo. The sophomore finished with a combined two goals and an assist in the wins.

Against Amity/North Haven/Cheshire, Criscuolo gave her team a 2-0 lead as the Westie Sharks won 4-1.

Criscuolo was at her best against Simsbury in a 2-1 overtime win, the team's first ever against Simsbury. Criscuolo had an assist on the first goal of the game, then scored ten seconds into overtime for the winner.

Week Ending January 8, 2017

In a loss to Hamden, Steinman scored 21 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and had two assists. The junior followed with an even more impressive effort against Xavier in another tough loss as he scored 33 points, including four 3-pointers, grabbed four rebounds, dished out three assists, and had four steals.

Week Ending January 1, 2017

Brendan Serenson

Senior

Boys hockey

West Haven hockey coach Joe Morrell was looking for his team to get off to a quick start in the 2016-2017 season. Senior goaltender Brendan Serenson did his part as the Westies opened the season with two wins in their first three games.

Serenson played in two of the games, stopping 96% (52-54) of the shots he faced, including an opening shutout against East Catholic. Serenson came up big for the Westies in the season opener on the road against East Catholic, stopping all 20 shots he faced.

With the Westies playing arch-rival Hamden, West Haven needed a solid effort in goal and got that from Serenson, despite losing 3-1. Serenson stopped 32 of 34 shots (94%), but the Westies came up just short in the loss.

Serenson has stopped 52 of 54 shots on the season for a save percentage of 96% after two games.

Week Ending December 18, 2016

Megan Froehlich

Freshman

Girls hockey

Entering the 2016-2017 season, the coaching staff of the West Haven/Sacred Heart Academy girls hockey team has stressed a balanced attack. Through the first three game, freshman Megan Froehlich has delivered.

2016 Fall Athletes of the Week

Week Ending November 27, 2016

Sheilan Velazquez (14)

Senior

Football

In a contest which saw the West Haven football team short-handed throughout, senior Sheilan Velazquez was more than capable of providing a spark.

Delivering in all aspects of the game, Velazquez led his team to a 28-21 victory over Fairfield Prep Thanksgiving morning to seal West Haven's undefeated regular season at 10-0.

Velazquez got the Westies on the scoreboard immediately when he returned the opening kickoff for 93 yards and a touchdown. Less than a minute into the contest, Velazquez delivered his second impact play of the game as he was on the receiving end of a 34-yard touchdown strike from Tim McCarthy for a 14-0 lead.

Velazquez finished the contest with four receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown, while also making an impact on special teams and defense.

Week Ending November 13, 2016

Tim McCarthy (2)

Senior

Football

In what was the biggest game to date this season for the West Haven football team, the Westies needed all hands on deck. Senior Tim McCarthy provided just that in a 59-52 victory over Shelton.

The starting quarterback completed both passes he threw for 77 yards and one touchdown. That was just the start of what the talented McCarthy would do.

After the Westies were down a linebacker in the second half of the game, coach Rich Boshea asked for someone to step up. That someone was McCarthy, despite never taking a snap as a linebacker or playing that position.

McCarthy immediately went to work with a key interception to stop a Shelton drive and finished with seven tackles. If that was not enough, McCarthy later recovered an onsides kick on special teams.

Week Ending November 6, 2016

Bob Hawkins (50)

Senior

Football

In a season which has been unblemished thus far through eight games, there have been plenty of stars on both sides of the ball for the West Haven football team. One of those stars does not score a lot of touchdowns, but does plenty to ensure others do.

On a team averaging 40 points per game, offensive lineman Bob Hawkins has been a key piece of the puzzle.  Along with the rest of his group on the line, the 5'-9", 222 pound lineman has consistently opened holes for the running backs to knock off huge chunks of yards at a time.

Hawkins has done the job defensively as well as the Westies have allowed just an average of 13 points per game. In a 33-23 win over Hand, the senior led the way with numerous tackles, allowing the Westies to jump out to an early lead and never look back.

Week Ending October 30, 2016

Madison Barbieri (18)

Sophomore

Girls Soccer

The West Haven defense has been stingy of late. One of the may reasons has been the play of sophomore Madison Barbieri.

Barbieri has started every game the last two years, is an excellent one on one defender, and consistently shuts down the opposition's best players.

According to head coach Pete Trenchard, Barbieri is not a "win the ball and kick it away" defender. She is calm with the ball at her feet and can dribble forward. Barbieri also passes the ball well and sees the field well.

Week Ending October 23, 2016

Devin Pascale (23)

Senior

Girls Volleyball

In a week which saw the West Haven volleyball team go on its hottest streak of the season, senior Devin Pascale was a big part of the Westies winning three matches in a row.

During West Haven's winning streak, Pascale just about did it all, accumulating 14 aces, 27 kills and six digs.

In a 3-0 win over Platt Tech, Pascale had six aces, 13 kills, one dig and one assist. In another shutout over Career, Pascale added three aces, three kills and two digs, while finishing the stretch with five aces, 11 kills and three digs in a 3-1 victory over North Haven

Week Ending October 16, 2016

MacKenzie Holy (15)

Junior

Girls Soccer
The West Haven girls soccer team has been on quite a roll. Unbeaten in seven games, the Westies have gotten contributions throughout the lineup.

Against Guilford, it was junior MacKenzie Holy's turn. Scoring twice in the first half, Holy led her team to a 3-2 upset victory over Guilford.

Holy wasted no time getting the Westies on the board as she scored just 3:42 in for a 1-0 lead. With the game even at one, Holy was at it again.

Positioned perfectly in front, the junior one-timed a shot home with 17:58 remaining in the first half to give West Haven a lead it never relinquished.

Holy has three goals and four assists on the season.

Week Ending October 9, 2016

Lauren Lewis (23)

Senior

Girls Soccer

In a week which saw West Haven rally to tie Sacred Heart Academy, then clinch a postseason bid, senior Lauren Lewis was right in the middle of the action.

Trailing by two goals against the Sharks, Lewis was pushed up to add to the attack. With Lewis up top, West Haven rallied for a pair of late goals to force a 2-2 tie as Lewis picked up an assist.

In a victory over Cross/Hillhouse/Career to help the Westies earn the postseason bid, Lewis was on her game once again as she scored twice and added an assist.

Lewis has five goals and is tied for the team lead in assists with seven on the season.

Week Ending October 2, 2016

Anthony Godfrey (6)

Senior

Football

In a contest between two SCC heavyweights, West Haven senior Anthony Godfrey made sure his team was the one to come out on top. Godfrey rushed 22 times for 288 yards and three touchdowns in a 41-14 West Haven win over Cheshire Friday evening.

Godfrey gave West Haven a 7-0 lead with a 43-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, before his 32-yard run set up West Haven's third score.

Godfrey iced the contest with a 49-yard touchdown run one play after Cheshire got within 14 points, and added a 76-yard score to seal the contest in the final seven minutes.

Week Ending September 25, 2016

Abdoul Aremu (11)

Senior

Boys Soccer

With the boys soccer team in the midst of an early season slump, coach Pete Hamasian was looking for someone to lead the way. Senior captain Abdoul Aremu was up to the task.

Scoring four goals this past week, Aremu helped the Westies get back on the winning track.

In a tough battle with rival Fairfield Prep, Aremu scored once, before the Westies fell 3-2.

Aremu was at his best against North Haven, leading the Westies to a 5-0 victory.  The senior put the momentum on West Haven's side, scoring the first three goals of the contest, as the Westies never looked back in their second win of the season.

Week Ending September 18, 2016

Gabi Prisco (20)

Senior

Girls Soccer

After falling in the season opener, the West Haven girls soccer team was well aware of the task at hand. With a young team on the field, the Westies had to turn to one of their leaders.

Senior Gabi Prisco responded in a big way. Scoring four goals and adding an assist on the fifth, Prisco led the Westies to a 5-2 victory over Cross/Hillhouse/Career.

Prisco got things going early for West Haven in its first victory of the season.  The senior got the Westies on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal, then had the Westies on top 3-1 at the half with two more tallies.

A goal by Prisco early in the second half increased the lead to 4-1, before her assist on the final West Haven goal of the game put the contest away.

Week Ending September 11, 2016

Anthony Godfrey (6)

Senior

Football

The West Haven football team was hoping to get off to a quick start in the 2016 season. Senior Anthony Godfrey assured that happened.

Scoring three times, once in the air and twice on the ground, Godfrey led the Westies to a season-opening 42-0 victory over Hamden.

The senior gave the Westies a 14-0 lead with a scoring reception in the second quarter, then extended the margin to 35-0 with a 19-yard touchdown run late in the first half.

Godfrey capped the scoring early in the third quarter with a 55-yard scoring run.
