Grizzlies top Westies
Late rally falls short for WH
By MIKE MADERA
Westie Blue
(May 3, 2023) - WEST HAVEN
– With the way Guilford’s Sophia Meade and West Haven’s Shyanne Raccio were pitching, it was obvious one swing could determine the outcome of a tight game. Guilford’s Addie Smith proved this to be true.
Smith’s long 3-run homer to center in the third inning was all Meade and Guilford needed in a 3-1 victory over West Haven in a Southern Connecticut Conference interdivision contest at Biondi Field in West Haven Wednesday evening.
Smith’s home run propelled Guilford to its third win in four games and helped the Grizzlies improve to 10-4 on the year.
“I know she (Raccio) was mixing pitches and I expected that to come,” Smith said. “When I saw my pitch, I just knew I had to drive it and do it for my team. I knew they were behind me.”
Meade was the beneficiary of Smith’s blast as she tossed a complete-game seven-hitter, striking out eight and not walking a batter.
“It was all about momentum today,” Guilford coach Kelliann Connors said. “I think that big hit gave us the momentum. It shifted back and forth here and there. They came up with some big hits too and we were able to get out of some tough situations.”
Meade worked out of four different jams, not allowing a West Haven run until Olivia McDonnell doubled to score Taylor Alfano, who doubled to lead off the seventh. Meade got out of further damage by getting Mia Rubirosa to ground to second for the final out of the game.
“We just didn’t get the big hit,” West Haven coach Joe Morrell said after his team fell to 8-5. “A few times we were knocking on the door, and they made a couple of nice plays. Obviously, she (Meade) pitched a good game.”
The Grizzlies scored the only runs they would need off Raccio in the third as Sophia Stanger hit a two-out single, Meade walked, and Smith launched the long homer to center for a 3-0 lead.
The third inning was the only blemish in the pitching line of Raccio as she went the distance, allowing eight hits, striking out eight and walking one.
“She has pitched three days in a row,” Morrell said of Raccio. “She has pitched well all three games. The pitchers were just about even, no errors by both teams, and it was a clean game. It was a playoff atmosphere. We just didn’t get the big hit at the right time.”
Guilford had one other threat, putting the first two runners on in the sixth, but a perfect double play set up by West Haven third baseman Hannah Burrows stalled the rally.
The rest was up to Meade and the Guilford defense as Meade had runners on base, but never gave in throughout the contest.
Raccio led off the second with a double for West Haven and moved to third on a sacrifice by Juliana Petruzziello, but Meade retired the next two batters to end the inning. Alfano and Burrows singled with one out in the fifth to put runners on the corners, but Meade got the next two outs to end the frame.
West Haven, which entered the contests with four straight wins and victories in six of seven, again threatened in the sixth with two-out singles by Brianna Miller and Raccio, but Meade again came up big with a strikeout to end the inning.
“That’s what it came down to,” Connors said. “It was going to be who came out of those tough situations because both teams were going back and forth hitting each other.
“Our level of play has slowly been increasing. Our play in the beginning of the season was a little sporadic. We are obviously not perfect. I am really happy with this game, but we are not done. We are going to get even better.”
Both teams played well defensively, with Adrianna Piascik making several solid plays at third for Guilford and Gianna Carrano doing the same at second for West Haven.

Smith finished the game with two hits for Guilford, while Alfano and Raccio each had a pair of hits for the Westies.
