Guilford blanks Westies
WH falls to 6-6 with loss

he West Haven volleyball team traveled to Guilford riding a two-game winning streak. That streak ended abruptly with a 25-13, 25-23, 25-17 loss to the Grizzlies.

With the defeat, West Haven fell to 6-6 on the year and needs two more wins to qualify for postseason play.
“We were flat and had no energy,” West Haven coach Kate Coldren said. “No matter what we tried, we didn't have any consistency in anything. It was just an off night.”  
Alison Frazer led the defense with 13 digs, Bianka Portugal Morales had 10 digs, while also adding four kills. Hudanur Sahin had nine digs and seven assists, Olivia McDonnell added nine kills, and Shannon Hoey chipped in seven digs in the loss. Sarah Davey ran the offense with nine assists.

“Both Liv (McDonnell) and Sam (Close) played well when we could get our offense together, and they worked hard to make that happen,” Coldren said. “We really have to regroup and get back to the basics if we are going to make it to the postseason.”


Back on Track
WH blanks Foran

 - The West Haven volleyball team got back on the winning track with a 3-0 victory at Foran Monday evening. The Westies improved to 7-6 with a 28-26, 25-17, 25-17 victory over the Lions.
“We played very well as a team tonight,” West Haven coach Kate Coldren said. “We were consistent and cohesive as a team. We've been missing that piece for a little while. Everyone did their job and did it well. It was a huge relief to see.”
Hudanur Sahin ran the offense with 23 assists, while adding eight digs on defense. Bianka Portugal Morales and Shannon Hoey each had 12 digs, with Portugal Morales also chipping in six kills and three aces.
Alison Frazer had 10 digs, Olivia McDonnell added nine kills, seven digs, and five blocks, Maddie Scillia had nine digs, Sam Close added eight kills, and Camila Queiroz had six digs.

“Hudanur (Sahin) played fantastic, and we really needed her leadership on the court. She came through. Bianka (Portugal Morales) was fantastic as well. She is such a smart player and she can do pretty much anything on the court.”


Law tops Westies
WH falls 3-2 in thriller

 - In a back-and-forth battle, the West Haven volleyball team fell to Jonathan Law 3-2 at West Haven High Wednesday evening. The Westies fell 25-16, 14-25, 19-25, 25-19, 15-12 and fell to 7-7 on the year.
“Tonight was definitely a frustrating loss for us,” West Haven coach Kate Coldren said. “Our inconsistency is our biggest issue this season. We have to have consistent play, communication, and energy in order to be successful and we are struggling with that.”
Hudanur Sahin played extremely well with 19 digs and 19 assists, while Olivia McDonnell had 12 kills and six aces. Bianka Portugal Morales had 23 digs and five kills, Maddie Scillia added 11 digs and five aces, and Sam Close had five kills.   

“Bianka (Portugal Morales) had another great game as did Maddie (Scillia) in the back row,” Coldren said. “Liv (McDonnell) played well in the front row, and her serving was excellent.”


Postseason Bound
WH tops Career 3-0

 - The West Haven volleyball team is headed to the postseason. With a 25-14, 25-10, 25-17 victory at Career Friday evening, the Westies improved to 8-7 on the year.
"Tonight, as a team, we qualified for states," West Haven coach Kate Coldren said. "We played well and we played our game. We had a few lapses of focus that resulted in some unforced errors, but we figured it out and did what we needed to do. Everyone did their job tonight, and I'm really proud of how we played."

Hudanur Sahin led the way for the Westies with 21 assists, four aces and two digs. Bianka Portugal Morales had 11 aces, seven digs, and four kills, Olivia McDonnell added eight kills and five aces, and Victalia Deida, Esther Ortiz, and Jayden Braacker each finished with four digs. Sam Close chipped in four kills in the win.


WH falls to SHA
Westies drop 3-2 decision

 - The West Haven volleyball team fell to 8-8 with a 3-2 loss at Sacred Heart Academy Monday evening. Despite a valiant effort, the Westies dropped a 22-25, 18-25, 25-20, 25-20, 8-15 decision.
“We battled tonight, and unfortunately, we just made a few too many errors in the fifth game to get the outcome we wanted,” West Haven coach Kate Coldren said. “Defensively, we were incredible. Our passing was on point, but we struggled a bit converting our passes into offense. Alison (Frazer) had a great night in the back row and Sam (Close) was a force at the net.” 
Hudanur Sahin ran the offense with 35 assists, while adding 12 digs defensively. Alison Frazer was strong defensively with 23 digs, Olivia McDonnell had a solid night with 14 kills and five digs, Sam Close added 16 kills and four blocks, while Bianka Portugal Morales chipped in 10 digs and four aces.Shannon Hoey finished the match with seven digs and four aces,

Maddie Scillia had six digs, Camila Queiroz added five digs, and Avery Criscio finished with four digs and two kills.


North tops West
Westies fall 3-1

 - The West Haven volleyball team lost its second straight match and fell to 8-9 with a 3-1 loss at North Haven. The Westies fell 24-26, 17-25, 25-23, 15-25 Wednesday evening.
“We had a few pretty big leads in games and North Haven stepped up and we didn't,” West Haven coach Kate Coldren said. “The mental errors definitely accumulated very quickly, and we just couldn't get it back together. We just have to be mentally stronger and more consistent with everything we do and not let mistakes get in the way of us being more successful.”
Hudanur Sahin ran the offense with 24 assists and added seven digs. Bianka Portugal Morales had 19 digs and four kills, Alison Frazer had 16 digs, Olivia McDonnell added 14 kills, 10 blocks, eight aces and eight digs, while Shannon Hoey had 13 digs. Sam Close chipped in 10 kills and three blocks, while Camila Queiroz had 10 digs.

“Liv (McDonnell), Bianka (Portugal Morales), and Alison (Frazer) all played very well tonight,” Coldren said. “They worked their butts off to give us the best possible chance at winning this match. Hopefully, we can make the necessary adjustments to finish the regular season on a strong note.”

Team effort leads to 3-1 victory

 - The West Haven volleyball team snapped its two-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory over Sheehan Saturday afternoon. The home victory by scores of 25-21, 25-13, 19-25, 25-14 moved West Haven back to the .500 mark at 9-9.
“It was a great win today,” West Haven coach Kate Coldren said. “Everyone showed up to play today and they played so well together. We were able to run an effective offense and spread the sets out to involve all the hitters. Moving forward, that is going to be very important to our success in the postseason.”
Sahin led the way for the Westies with 28 assists, four digs, four aces, and three kills, Alison Frazer had 16 digs, Olivia McDonnell added 12 kills, nine aces, and four blocks, while Bianka Portugal Morales had 10 digs and six kills. Maddie Scillia and Camila Queiroz each had eight digs, while Avery Criscio added five kills and five gigs, Sam Close had five kills and three blocks, and Shannon Hoey had four digs.

“All of our hitters played fantastic today,” Coldren said. “Hudanur (Sahin) took control of the offense today, and we really needed it. We played pretty solid defense as well. Alison (Frazer) and Bianka (Portugal Morales) played very consistent and smart in the back row.”


Senior Victory
Team effort leads to 3-1 victory

 - The West Haven volleyball team honored its seniors Monday evening and the team responded with a 3-0 victory over Lyman Hall Monday evening at West Haven High on Senior Night. The Westies improved to 10-9 on the year by scores of 25-16, 25-13, 25-9.
“We played so well tonight and our seniors really shined,” West Haven coach Kate Coldren said. “Every single player stepped up and played fantastic, and I can't say enough about them. I'm so proud of them.”
West Haven took a 13-9 lead in the first game on a kill by Sam Close. Olivia McDonnell increased the margin to 17-10 with a kill, and Avery Criscio’s kill had the Westies on top 21-12.
Criscio got the Westies closer to a first game win with a kill for a 23-14 advantage, before an ace by Bianka Portugal Morales increased the margin to 24-15.
West Haven jumped out to a 13-4 lead in the second game before a Lyman Hall timeout on four consecutive aces by Portugal Morales. A pair of kills by McDonnell helped West Haven to a 4-2 lead, before Portugal Morales took over in the second game.
Hudanur Sahin ran the West Haven offense with 20 assists, and added nine digs on defense. Alison Frazer was stellar defensively with 15 digs, McDonnell had 10 kills and four digs, Portugal Morales added nine aces, seven digs and six kills, while Maddie Scillia finished with 11 digs.

Criscio chipped in five kills and four digs, and Close finished with five kills.


Westies fall to Thunderbirds
North Branford tops WH 3-1

 - Preparing for the postseason, the West Haven volleyball team came up on the short end of a 3-1 score against North Branford Tuesday evening. The 25-27, 20-25, 25-18, 21-25 loss at West Haven High dropped the Westies to 10-10 on the year.
“We definitely came out flat and no energy,” West Haven coach Kate Coldren said. “We fought for a lot of points, but then we would make a silly error. It just wasn't our night. Now, we have to get prepared for the postseason.”
Alison Frazer led the West Haven defense with 18 digs, Shannon Hoey had 12 digs, Sarah Davey added 11 digs and seven assists, and Maddie Scillia and Olivia McDonnell each had 10 digs. McDonnell also had nine kills, seven aces, and six blocks, Hudanur Sahin chipped in 11 assists and 10 digs, and Bianka Portugal Morales added 15 assists.

“Alison (Frazer), Shannon (Hoey), Bianka (Portugal Morales), and Maddie (Scillia) played great on defense,” Coldren said. “They worked really hard to get to every ball. Our serving in general was very good as well.”


Playoff Victory
WH tops Lauralton Hall in SCC opener

- The West Haven volleyball team opened postseason play with a 3-1 victory over No. 9 Lauralton Hall Friday evening in West Haven. The No. 8 Westies won by scores of 25-20, 25-19, 16-25, 25-18.
“We played great as a team today,” West Haven coach Kate Coldren said. “Our defense handled their two big hitters and were able to run our offense effectively. We've been serving really tough lately and that's been a part of our success as well.”
Hudanur Sahin led the Westies with 18 assists, six digs, four aces, and two kills, Alison Frazer led the defense with 13 digs, Camila Queiroz added 12 digs, and Sam Close had 10 kills.
“Liv (McDonnell) and Sam (Close) were nearly unstoppable at the net tonight, and Alison (Frazer) and Camila (Queiroz) led the team on defense.” 

Olivia McDonnell played well with nine kills, four blocks, and four digs, Bianka Portugal Morales had nine digs and three kills, Sarah Davey added eight assists, and Shannon Hoey and Maddie Scillia each added five digs in the win.


Amity tops Westies
WH falls in SCC quarterfinals

 - The run in the Southern Connecticut Conference tournament has ended for the eighth-seeded West Haven volleyball team. Traveling to play top-seeded Amity, the Westies fell 25-19, 25-13, 25-17 at Amity High Monday evening.
“Amity is a tough team,” West Haven coach Kate Coldren said. “They have some big hitters and we worked hard to slow them down, but we couldn't stop them all. We struggled a bit on serve receive at times, so we weren't always able to get our offense going. When we did, we were solid.”
Alison Frazer led the West Haven defense with nine digs, Bianka Portugal Morales added eight digs, two kills and two aces, and Maddie Scillia had six digs. Sarah Davey added nine assists, Olivia McDonnell had nine kills, four aces and three digs, and Avery Criscio had three digs.

“Bianka (Portugal Morales) and Alison (Frazer) played well in the back row, and Olivia was strong in the middle. Now, we get ready for states.”


Season Over
WH falls to Westhill in state tournament

 - The season is over for the West Haven volleyball team. Facing a tough challenge on the road, No. 21 West Haven fell to No. 12 Westhill 13-25 12-25 12-25 in the opening round of the Class LL state tournament. The 3-0 loss completed West Haven’s season at 11-12.
“Westhill is a tough team that plays in a tough conference,” West Havn coach Kate Coldren said. “We put up a decent fight, but we were a little sloppy at times and really struggled to run our offense.”
Bianka Portugal Morales led the defense with 10 digs, Hudanur Sahin ran the offense with nine assists, Olivia McDonnell had seven kills, four digs, and three blocks, and Alison Frazer added five digs in the loss.

“I'm really proud of everything this team accomplished this season, and I hope the seniors are just as proud of themselves and all the hard work they put into this program,” Coldren said.

Westies shut out Hillhouse in opener

 - The West Haven girls volleyball team opened the season in impressive fashion with a 3-0 road victory over Hillhouse Friday evening. The Westies won by scores of 25-5, 25-20, and 25-12.
“It was good to start the season off on a positive note with a solid win,” West Haven coach Kate Coldren said. “Before the game, we talked about playing our game at our pace and we did that for the majority of the game. We had some moments where we lost focus, but we got right back on track.”
Maddie Scillia led the way with nine aces, Hudanur Sahin had eight assists and two aces, Camila Queiroz had six kills, Alison Frazer had five aces and two digs, while Bianka Portugal chipped in three aces and three digs and Olivia McDonnell had three aces and three kills. Sarah Davey added four assists and Jayden Braacker had three aces.
“Alison (Frazer) and Maddie (Scillia) were consistent and tough on the service line,” Coldren said. “Olivia (McDonnell) and Camila (Queiroz) were strong at the net.”

Westies improve to 2-0

 - With a consistent team effort, the West Haven volleyball team improved to 2-0 with a 3-0 victory over North Haven in the home opener for West Haven Saturday afternoon. The Westies topped North Haven 25-14, 25-10, 25-18.
“We are off to a strong start and I couldn't be more proud of this team,” West Haven coach Kate Coldren said. “So far, they have shown me a tremendous amount of chemistry and resiliency. They are communicating and working well together, and I can't say enough about their mental toughness so far. They are fixing mistakes and not getting down on themselves.”
Hudanur Sahin led the Westies as she ran the offense with 13 assists and added nine digs on the defensive side. Alison Frazer also had nine digs, Bianka Portugal Morales had seven digs and three aces, while Avery Criscio added five digs, and Camila Queiroz had four kills and four digs.
“Hudanur (Sahin) had a great game and showed great leadership,” Coldren said. “She took control of the offense and played smart. Olivia (McDonnell) and Sam (Close) were really strong in the middle at the net, and at the service line.”Olivia McDonnell also played well with five digs, five kills, and two blocks, Shannon Hoey had three digs, and Maddie Scillia added three digs and three aces.

 - The West Haven volleyball team is on a roll. Not only did the Westies win their third straight match, the was their third straight shutout victory as West Haven topped Foran 25-22, 25-9, 25-22 at West Haven High Tuesday evening.
“We played well tonight,” West Haven coach Kate Coldren said. “We definitely need to make sure we don't get too comfortable against teams because that will lead to us getting sloppy and a lot of unforced errors. We had a few too many of those tonight.”
Hudanur Sahin led the Westies with 12 assists, four digs, three kills, and two aces, Olivia McDonnell had nine kills and four digs, while Bianka Portugal Morales had nine digs and five kills. In a balanced attack, Sarah Davey had eight assists and three aces, Sam Close added six blocks, six kills, and three aces, Alison Frazer added six digs and two kills, and Shannon Hoey added four digs and three aces. 

“Olivia (McDonnell) and Sam Close had another great night at the net,” Coldren said. “Bianka (Portugal Morales) was fantastic all the way around. I am so impressed how everyone on this team is doing their job and they are supporting each other through the frustrations until they can get back on track. They have an amazing team mentality.”


First Loss
Westies fall to Guilford

 - After opening the season with three straight shutout victories, the West Haven volleyball team had the favor returned. Playing host to Guilford, the Westies were shut out, losing in three straight games, 25-18, 25-19, and 25-23.
“It was a super frustrating game for so many reasons, but the bottom line is we didn't play our best volleyball,” West Haven coach Kate Coldren said. “We struggled to turn some outstanding passing/defense into points at the net. We didn't keep things simple, and our communication wasn't good at all. That is a recipe for a loss. We will recover from this loss and be just fine.”

Alison Frazer led the defense with 10 digs, and Bianka Portugal Morales had nine digs, Maddie Scillia had eight digs, and Shannon Hoey finished with six digs. Westies fall to 3-2 with 3-1 loss

 - After starting the season in impressive fashion with three consecutive sweeps, the West Haven volleyball team has hit a bump in the road. After falling to Guilford, the Westies dropped their second consecutive match with a 3-1 loss at Jonathan Law Monday evening.
The scores of the match were 22-25, 15-25, 25-13, 23-25.
“This was definitely a frustrating loss tonight,” West Haven coach Kate Coldren said. “It took us a while to wake up and play, but we dug ourselves a pretty significant hole and just couldn't get out of it. We started to play way too cautious when we needed to be more aggressive, but we never quit, and I give them tons of credit for that.”
Olivia McDonnell led the Westies with a solid all-around game, finishing with 14 kills, six aces, four blocks and four digs. Alison Frazer was stellar defensively with 17 digs, while Bianka Portugal Morales added 11 digs, three aces, and two kills.
Sarah Davey ran the offense with 21 assists, Avery Criscio had 11 digs, Shannon Hoey had six digs, Camila Queiroz added five digs and four kills, while Sam Close finished with five kills.“

Olivia (McDonnell) had an amazing game tonight and was pretty much unstoppable at the net,” Coldren said. “Alison (Frazer), Avery (Criscio), and Bianka (Portugal Morales) worked really hard in the back row and had some big plays. Sarah (Davey) came in off the bench tonight and played really smart.”

Westies fall to 3-3 with 3-0 loss

 - The West Haven volleyball team dropped its third consecutive match with a 3-0 loss at Brien McMahon Wednesday evening. The 25-20, 25-15, 25-9 loss dropped the Westies to 3-3 on the year.
“We struggled to pass against some really tough serving tonight,” West Haven coach Kate Coldren said. “When we can't pass, we can't run an offense and score points. The defense did a decent job tonight, but we still need to be more disciplined and get to our base in order to adjust to hitters. We have to get back into a good rhythm again and play with more confidence. Our current rhythm isn't working for us.” 

Bianka Portugal Morales led the defensive effort with 10 digs, Alison Frazer added seven digs, and Hudanur Sahin had five digs and four assists. Olivia McDonnell chipped in four kills, three aces, three digs and two blocks, while Maddie Scillia and Camila Queiroz each had three digs.

Westies improve to 4-3 with 3-0 win

 - The West Haven volleyball team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 3-0 home victory over Career Saturday afternoon. With the 25-16, 25-9, 25-18 victory, West Haven improved to 4-3 on the year.
“We played well today,” West Haven coach Kate Coldren said. “We definitely needed this win for a confidence boost. Hopefully, we can stay on this track.  We have a quick turnaround with a game on Monday. We really wanted to focus on making fewer mental mistakes and making sure we stay in every play and every point. We still had a few too many errors than I would like to see, but we definitely played better, and we can build on this.”

 - A match after snapping its three-game losing streak, the West Haven volleyball team fell back to .500 with a 3-1 loss against Sacred Heart Academy Monday afternoon at West Haven High. With the 20-25, 25-18, 16-25, 23-25 defeat the Westies dropped to 4-4 on the season.
“We had some really great moments and some not so great moments tonight,” West Haven coach Kate Coldren said. “Our inconsistency is killing us right now. We have to do a better job of staying in every play and every point. We have to keep a lead once we have it and finish out games.”
Alison Frazer led West Haven’s defense with 14 digs, while Olivia McDonnell was impressive on both sides of the ball with 16 kills, three blocks, and three digs.
“Alison (Frazer) had a fantastic night on defense, and both Liv (McDonnel) and Sam (Close) played well at the net. We have another busy week this week, so we have to recover quickly from this loss.”

Sarah Davey ran the offense with 18 assists and four aces, while also providing eight digs on defense. Sam Close added seven kills, four blocks, and two aces, Camila Queiroz  had eight digs, Shannon Hoey had seven digs, and Hudanur Sahin chipped in three digs and six assists.


Westies fall to Sheehan
WH drops heartbreaker

 - The West Haven volleyball team fell to 4-5 with its second straight loss. The 23-25, 25-21, 25-14, 24-26, 14-16 defeat at Sheehan dropped the Westies under .500 after an impressive 3-0 start to the season.
“This was absolutely heartbreaking for us tonight,” West Haven coach Kate Coldren said. “The girls worked so hard, but just didn't finish things when they had the opportunities. We had Sheehan's back against the wall by being up two sets and we gave them hope.  There were some fantastic rallies and exciting plays by both teams, and it really could've gone either way, but we ended up on the wrong side of this one.”
The Westies received a tremendous team effort in the loss. Hudanur Sahin ran the West Haven offense with 27 assists and three aces, while also playing well on the defensive side with 20 digs. Alison Frazer, Bianka Portugal Morales, Shannon Hoey and Camila Queiroz all were exceptional on the defensive side as Frazer had 23 digs, Portugal Morales had 21 digs, Hoey had 17 digs, and Queiroz also added 14 digs in the loss.
Olivia McDonnell had a solid match with 19 kills, four blocks, four aces, and three digs, Sam Close had nine kills, four aces, and three blocks, and Maddie Scillia added seven digs in the loss.

“Alison (Frazer), Bianka (Portugal Morales) and Shannon (Hoey) were unstoppable in the back row tonight,” Coldren said. “Avery (Criscio), Olivia (McDonnell) and Sam (Close) were really strong in the front row. I'm beyond proud of how they played tonight because this one was a tough one.”

WH edges Lyman Hall

 - The West Haven volleyball team snapped its two-game losing streak and got back to the .500 mark with a thrilling 3-2 victory at Lyman Hall Thursday evening. The 28-26, 24-26, 25-20, 24-26, 15-8 victory helped the Westies improve to 5-5 on the year.
“Tonight, this team really showed me what they are capable of doing if they really stay focused and stay in the moment,” West Haven coach Kate Coldren said.  “They battled the entire match and did what they needed to do to get the win. Defensively, we played awesome, and offensively, we were smart and consistent.”
Alison Frazer was tremendous on defense as she led the way with 38 digs. Six players were in double digits in digs on the defensive side as Bianka Portugal Morales and Shannon Hoey each had 18, Hudanur Sahin and Maddie Scillia each had 17, and Camila Queiroz had 12.
“Hudanur (Sahin) played really well tonight and took control of the offense, and I can't speak enough about Alison (Frazer) and Bianka (Portugal Morales).
