Changes
West Haven enters year with new coach and players
By MIKE MADERA

(April 7, 2014) –
The West Haven boys’ track team opens the 2014 campaign with some changes. Among the most glaring is a new head coach.
With long-time coach Ed McCarthy stepping down, Ryan Knight will take over a program which finished eighth in the Southern Connecticut Conference championships a season ago.
Knight comes from Bolton High School, where he served as an assistant coach for three years.
"I am very excited to take over the team," Knight said. "Last year, the team came in eighth place in the SCC Championship meet.
"We will be looking to improve on that this year with almost 40 boys on the roster. We are very young with only six seniors."
The Westies will need to replace graduated All-State players Eddy Wiiliams, JaWaun Manning, Robert Hayes and Bobby Sampson.
Leading the way for the Westies will be seniors Duane Gary and Ervin Philips. Both starred on the football team which advanced to the CIAC state semifinals and will look to bring that success to the track.
"Duane Gary and Ervin Philips are two seniors that are new to track, but should stand out and lead our quality group of sprinters."
The Westies will also lean on juniors Eric Singleton and Denzel Asson, who will take part in many events.
"We are expecting great things from returning juniors Eric Singleton and Denzel Asson, as they are elite performers in numerous events. It may take some time for us to find our way, but we should be competitive this year."
West Haven opens its season, Friday, April 11 at Wilbur Cross when it plays Hillhouse and Xavier at 3:45 p.m.

Congratulations to Vanessa Brown on being named to the Southern Connecticut Conference Second team in the triple jump.
