- What a difference a year makes. Less than 12 months after finishing a season which did not include a team win, the West Haven girls tennis team is looking to establish an entirely new identity.
With an experienced squad returning, coach Kara Kaczynski is looking for big things from her senior-laden team in 2015.
"Our team goal is to make the state tournament this year," Kaczynski said.
With rough weather hindering the start of preseason, there is still plenty of competition for seeds in both singles and double play.
West Haven will be led by senior captains Talon Yahaya, Nurul Sauffian, Cindy Nguyen and Kharl Reynado. Yahaya and Sauffian will be a top seed in doubles play, while Nguyen will play in a top singles spot.

"They are all excellent leaders on and off the court," Kaczynski said of her captains. "They are all top in their class. I have a total of ten varsity seniors that will make a positive impact on the team.
"Talon and Nurul will both be playing doubles in a top spot. Both of their overall games have greatly improved. They are determined to beat the teams they lost close matches to last year. They both are leaders on and off the court."
Kaczynski also has seniors Rania Abu-Sitteh and Lhamo Dolma  to rely on as each will play in top singles spots. Seniors Cindy Li, Elise Abu-Sitteh, Amber Elusma and Katerina Mazzacane will also play a big part in the 2015 season.

Rania Abu-Sitteh will play a key role in the success of the 2015 West Haven girls tennis team. File photo courtesy of Todd Dandelske.
"Rania Abu-Sitteh and Lhamo Dolma are both seniors and both will play in top singles spots," Kaczynski said. "They both have the dedication and experience. "Cindy Nguyen will play in a top singles position. Cindy's game has really improved and she is a leader on and off the court. She is a real hard worker."
Kaczynski also has some talented juniors which will also make an impact for the Westies. Stefania Vendrella will see action in one of the top spots in double splay, while Maggie Yeh will play either singles or doubles.
"Stefania Vendrella will be a force at a top spot in doubles," Kaczynski said. "Her volleys and serves have really improved. Her competitive attitude and perseverance will make her even more successful this year. Maggie Yeh will also make a varsity impact in either doubles or singles. Her game has improved tremendously."
West Haven opens the season April 10 against Career in a home match at 3:45 p.m.
