Looking Up
Nice mix of players has tennis team looking for big things in 2013
By MIKE MADERA

West Haven boys’ tennis coach Jason Kirck is thrilled with what he has seen from his team thus far. While the season is still in the early stages, Kirck is well aware of what his team needs to do equal or better last year’s 11-9 record.
“We need to have continual improvement of all players,” Kirck said. “We need to get off to a great start. We need leadership of the seniors and captains and we have to adjust to a new schedule.
“We want to make the states and make the SCC’s. We want to continue to build life long tennis players who have the skills and passion to play tennis for many years.”
The Westies have a nice mix of youth and veterans for a team which has solid expectations. This year’s team will be led by senior captains Chris Ashong and Chris Mazzacane, each playing singles matches.

Senior captain Chris Ashong will play a big role on the 2013 team. Photo courtesy of Todd Dandelske.
“This year’s captains are doing a fantastic job of setting an example for our program and our younger players,” Kirck said. “Both of our captains are excellent players that both have an outstanding work ethic and a desire to compete. We could not ask for better leadership than they have provided so far and we are looking forward to a great season with them as our leaders.”
The Westies have several key players returning from last season’s squad. Mazzacane will start the season as the second seed in singles play, but that could change, as all positions are not set in stone according to Kirck.
Ashong will start the season as the third seed in singles, while sophomore Mike Tran is the four seed. Freshman John Delgado will start the season as the top seed in singles play.
On the doubles side, juniors Howard Powell and Devin Hickman will open the season as the top doubles team. Seniors Abdul Zaccariah and Jacob Yisehak will be the second seed, while seniors Austin Hansen and Jimmy Carrillo will be seeded third in doubles play.

Junior Devin Hickman will lead the Westies from his doubles spot. Photo courtesy of Todd Dandelske.
“All of our players have improved tremendously over the past years and all are ready for a great season,” Kirck said.
Kirck states Mazzacane has improved his serve, Ashong has improved his net play, Tran has advanced his serve and overall game and Powell has improved his backhand and has a more powerful serve. Hickman has done better with the strength of his forehand shot, Zaccariah has improved his serve and net play, Yisehak has gotten better with his overall game and Carrillo has made an outstanding overall improvement since last season in all aspects of his game.
Hansen, Delgado, senior Santiago Perez (doubles) and freshman Jeremy Borelli (doubles) will all make an impact on the team.
“Austin Hansen brings athleticism and toughness to our team, plus a desire to compete and win” Kirck said. “He is a great addition to the team.
“John Delgado is an outstanding player in every aspect of the game. He is the best freshman we have had in my five years. I am looking forward to watching him play singles against the top teams in the SCC we play this season. Jeremy Borelli and Santiago Perez are both new players to the program who have good tennis skill and will be in the mix to play in varsity matches this season.”
Kirck likes what he has seen from his team early on.
“I have seen a great attitude of all the players,” Kirck said. “I like the dedication of all players, the willingness to accept coaching and the work on individual weaknesses of all players. We have had two great scrimmages so far against Foran and Law.
“We need to improve on consistency of all players, limiting unforced errors, continued improvement of our first serves and singles and doubles strategy.”
West Haven opens the season Wednesday, April 3 at Xavier at 3:30 p.m.
