What a week it has been for the West Haven boys tennis team. Winning its seventh straight match, West Haven took home its first Southern Connecticut Conference title with a 5-2 defeat over Shelton Thursday morning at Yale University.
"Winning the SCC championship is the culmination of all the hard work and dedication our team has put into this season," West Haven coach Jason Kirck said after his team improved to 16-6. "All of our players have improved tremendously this past season and have all risen to the occasion to help our team. To have our players make history by winning the SCC's is a statement about the West Haven High School tennis program. Our goal as a program is to continue to improve and set high goals for each player and for our team. None of this would have been possible without great leadership from our captains, John Delgado and Mike Tran, and the guidance of our assistant coach, Nadir Amato."

The Division II championship comes along with some individual recognition as head coach Jason Kirck was tabbed the SCC Division II Coach of the Year and second-seeded singles player James Delgado was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
"The sky is the limit for James," Kirck said of Delgado. "We have a nickname for him - The Beast. He just goes out there and plays awesome tennis everyday. He has a world of potential and it is going to be exciting to see how far he takes it the next three years.
"Winning Coach of the Year is really saying that we had the TEAM of the year. It is an award that the team has earned by coming to practice every day with the desire to improve. Our team improved in every aspect of the game as the season went on, which is evidenced by losing to Shelton 4-3 the first time and beating them 5-2 for the championship. Coaching is also a team effort. Assistant  coach Nadir Amato is an outstanding tennis mind and there is no way the West Haven tennis program is where it is today without Nadir's time, effort and knowledge."

The Westies, who avenged an earlier season loss to the Gaels, won three of four singles matches and two of three doubles contests.
"The team effort was absolutely awesome," Kirck said. "The epitome was Jeremy Borelli. After having clinched the title and being injured, he still went out and finished a three-hour match, beating a player from Shelton who he had lost to earlier this year. Number one and number two doubles played their best matches of the season in the SCC's, showing that we are up for any competition."
In singles play, top-seeded John Delgado fell to Alex Ruenhorst, 6-3, 6-0, second-seeded James Delgado defeated Matt Zampano, 6-4, 6-2, third-seeded Mike Tran defeated Ryan Corbett, 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-4 and fourth-seeded Jeremy Borelli defeated Richard Tran, 7-6 (6), 5-7, 7-5.

"We are battle tested," said Kirck who has been at West Haven for seven years. "We are ready for the challenges of the states. I could not be more proud of this team. They banded together as a group and made history. No one can ever take that away from us. We are the SCC champs for 2015.
"We are looking to build on this for the future. We expect to be one of the best teams in the SCC again next season and we are always looking for players/athletes to join up with us to learn and improve their tennis skills."

Westies enjoying stellar Season
WH looking forward to postseason

With all the excitement of spring teams qualifying for the postseason and the stress of others trying to get in, one team from West Haven has left quite an impression in the 2015 spring season. Having won four straight matches, including Monday afternoon’s 7-0 victory over Lyman Hall, the West Haven boys tennis team improved to 13-6 on the season.
Coach Jason Kirck’s team not only has impressed other teams, but has impressed the West Haven coach as well with the Southern Connecticut Conference and state tournaments approaching.
“It has been a great season so far,” Kirck said following Monday’s win. “We have only one loss in the division, but more importantly, we have great people on the tennis team. Every day has been a great, fun learning experience for the team mainly due to our captains and the great leadership of them and this year’s senior class.”
The captains Kirck refers to are senior Mike Tran and junior John Delgado. Tran is the third seed in singles play and has a 15-3 record, while Delgado is the top singles seed for the Westies and has a 14-5 record.
Freshman James Delgado is the team’s second seed in singles play and has posted a 14-3 mark, while junior Jeremy Borelli is 9-6. Kirck has also switched around his third-seeded doubles team and that mixed team has produced a 13-4 record.

Jeremy Borelli and the West Haven boys tennis team are eagerly awaiting the postseason. Photo courtesy of Todd Dandelske.
"John (Delgado), James (Delgado) and Mike (Tran) are extremely powerful tennis players with great all court games,” Kirck said. “They make adjustments easily on the court and are able to dissect their opponents’ strengths and weaknesses and use those to their advantage.
“We have been experimenting with our doubles, trying to find just the right combination of skill, athleticism and chemistry. All of our doubles teams have improved over the course of the season and are playing their best tennis of the year right now. Doubles play will be the key to our SCC tournament success.”
The success of this team has been building the last couple of years. With a core group which has steadily improved and with Kirck at the helm, the team has turned the corner.
“The most rewarding part of this season has been watching the maturation of our team and program and watching players improve over the course of this year and over the course of four years,” Kirck said. “Also, it is watching the players’ skill level improve to the point where they can execute shots they could not earlier in the season. It has been rewarding experiencing the bond that the players have with each other, watching them root each other on. They are great student athletes that are a pleasure to be a part of.”
The Westies picked up their 13th win of the season Monday afternoon in Wallingford with a convincing victory over the Trojans.
“It was a great team effort,” Kirck said. “All members of the team played well. It was a good win for the program.”
In singles play, top-seeded John Delgado defeated Nick Fiorillo, 6-1, 6-0, second-seeded James Delgado defeated Jake Young, 6-0, 6-3, third-seeded Tran defeated Jon Jacobs, 6-2, 6-2, and fourth-seeded Luis Alvarez defeated Jake Wolanksy, 6-4, 6-2.

The West Haven boys tennis team has plenty of experience returning for the 2015 season. While the team has to replace the graduated Howard Powell, George Oppong and Devin Hickman, depth and experience will create some good competition in terms of seeds this year.
"I have liked the attitude of the team to work hard," West Haven coach Jason Kirck said. "The off-season improvement is evident, and I like the willingness and desire to compete. I also have liked the leadership of the veterans.
"For a successful season, we need the poise of our singles players in key spots and daily improvement of our doubles teams in terms of skills and strategy."
With goals of winning the Southern Connecticut Conference  Division II title and qualifying for the state tournament as a team, the Westies have plenty of talent to do so.
With seeds still be played out, the 2015 team will be led by senior captain Mike Tran and junior captain John Delgado who was an All-SCC selection last season as a sophomore.

"They are great leaders," Kirck said of his captains. "They are great players. They both set awesome examples in terms of work ethic and dedication to the program."
Kirck can also rely on returning players Jeremy Borelli, Kevin Coyle, Luis Alvarez, Wyatt Condon, Marwan Lkhal, Oreoluma Olowe, Charlie Sihaphong and Jake Smith. Coyle and Condon are seniors, Borelli, Alvarez, Lkhal, Sihaphong and Smith are juniors and Olowe is a sophomore.
"Jeremy Borelli has good experience and I am looking for a break out year from him," Kirck said. "Mike Tran is a seasoned player , who will have a huge year for the team. Luis Alvarez is a great athlete with excellent hands and Oreo Olowe's off season improvement has been tremendous."

Kirck also has a freshman, James Delgado, who he feels will make a big impact on the 2015 squad.
"He is an excellent player," Kirck said of James Delgado. "He has a great overall game. He has a huge serve. He will make an immediate impact in singles."
As the seeds unfold, Kirck, who saw his team finish 9-11 last season, has plenty to choose from. John and James Delgado, along with Tran, Borelli, Coyle and Alvarez will all compete for singles spots. Condon, Smith, Olowe, Sihaphong and Lkhal will compete for doubles spots.
The team is looking to get off to a good start in what should be a competitive SCC schedule.
"The SCC is always a tough league with Amity, Hand, Notre Dame, Fairfield Prep and Guilford on the schedule," Kirck said. "Those are great tests to see how far the West Haven program has come."
West Haven opens the season April 8 at Foran at 3:45 p.m.
