The West Haven girls soccer team opened the year against a tough Mercy team and fell 3-0 in Middletown Thursday evening.

The young Westies battled, but it was not enough as Mercy took a 2-0 lead in the first 25 minutes of the game and never looked back.
“We played great defense for the first 25 minutes, but after an injury to one of our forwards and the need to use the bench, they (Mercy) scored two goals in the next ten minutes,” West Haven coach Kyle Brown said. “We ended the game in the second half with some great defense and only allowed one goal in the second half. For a young team, there is optimism coming forward because for over half of our team it was their first varsity game. I'm excited to see them in the second half of the season as we gain some experience.”
The Westies received a strong performance in goal from Kassidy Carrano, who made 14 saves, including three on breakaways.
